Earlier this year we were commissioned to carry out a major cleaning project at Buston Manor, a beautiful Grade II listed building situated south of Maidstone and managed by tregothnan.co.uk.

The Manor comprises of 18 rooms of various sizes several hallways, 3 flights of stairs, 2 kitchens along with smaller utility areas.

After completing our detailed survey and agreeing a start date we set aside 5 days to complete the work. The first day of the work was all about preparation, floors to be swept and vacuumed, skirtings and door frames to be wiped along with window ledges and fire surrounds ensuring no unwanted debris was left on the surfaces thus enabling us to carry out the cleaning more effectively.

The first stage was to treat the terracotta with a specialist detergent to remove heavy soiling embedded into the stone. Once extracted it's then dried a dedicated stone sealer was applied as the stone is extremely porous. Several coats were needed to fully restore the natural look and lustre of the tiles and protect against future staining, this of course makes future cleaning much easier.

Onto the hardwood floors. These, as is evident from the photographs, had been neglected for years and cleaned with various chemicals that have damaged the wax coating. You'll notice the streaking in the photographs and the dull finish of the wood.

The cleaning was done with preservation in mind as the owner didn't want the floors overly restored, so keeping the aged patina. With this in mind the cleaning was done with a dedicated detergent and surfactant that clean and restore. The surface was then finished off with a liquid wax coating. The contrast between before and after is really extreme as you can see in the photos.

Then the Amtico flooring in both the kitchens was cleaned with a specialist detergent to remove heavy build up of grease and food residue.

All the carpets in the property are a mix of wool and man made fibre and were given our thorough CCC deep clean and the pile reset.

Working on the manor was hard graft and produced more than one blister yet it was a joy and privilege to help restore this beautiful building to its original glory. Both ourselves and the owners were thrilled with the results.
