We were called this week from a customer needing an emergency clean on some tennis court astroturf. Of course, we got there as soon so we could to assess what needed to be done.

 

As soon as Lee arrived, he knew this wasn’t going to be an easy clean but fortunately he has the knowledge and the correct chemicals on board to clean the turf effectively, leaving no indication at all of what happened.

 

Bitumen and Tarmac are not easily removed from any hard or soft surfaces that aren’t resistant to solvents or volatile chemicals, and heat shouldn’t be applied as this would break down the material from solid to liquid and seep into the base of the astroturf fibres. So a gentle and methodical approach is always advised.

 

Lee applied a non volatile solvent by sponge, left it 30 seconds then scraped gently with a plastic blade. This process was repeated several times until the bulk of the bitumen was removed yet it still left an unsightly dark shadow so more had to be done.

 

One last application of solvent was applied again then heat extracted gently to remove any left over marks. This patch measuring 10” x 8” took 1 hour 20 minutes to restore it.

 

As you can see from the photos it is now restored and looking like new, so it’s anyone for Tennis instead of anyone for Tarnnis. Another job well done!
