Adverse pile in carpets means flattened or matted fibres that are often results from furniture, foot traffic, or pets.

This occurs when carpet fibres are compressed by weight or pressure, resulting in a less elevated appearance of the carpet surface.

Matted Pile:

Fibers clump from moisture or poor cleaning, resulting in a tangled or flattened look.

This occurs when fibres are oriented in varying directions, resulting in a non-uniform appearance. This can give the appearance of the carpet looking unclean whereas it’s merely the fibres pointing in different directions akin to when you brush your hand along suede.

A carpet rake is designed to lift flattened fibres, remove debris, and improve carpet appearance. Like a garden rake but for carpets, it fluffs up fibres, loosens dirt and pet hair, and makes vacuuming easier.

Vacuuming, especially with a carpet rake or steam cleaning, can help restore carpet pile. Weekly vacuuming lifts flattened fibres but avoid over-vacuuming on high-pile carpets.

Ensure carpets dry thoroughly after cleaning to keep fibres from staying flat.
